There was once a poem written: In fourteen hundred ninety-two Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue – that’s all I remember of it. But we do know that his three ships reached land – the Americas on October 12, 1492. Every October when I was in school we learned about Christopher Columbus’ voyage. We were taught about him, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella and Columbus’ trip westward across the Atlantic trying to reach India. I can still remember the pictures in our middle school history books of a flat earth and monsters waiting to devour any ship that dared go too far. Today’s Christopher Columbus narrative has changed.

It was specifically founded in 1890 because Sons of the American Revolution would not allow women! However, DAR is now having a problem identifying what a woman is! Several weeks ago, I interviewed Carris Kocher in the Philadelphia area and a relatively new member of the Daughters of the American Revolution having just joined in 2023. September 11, 2001 – do you remember where you were when you first heard the news of the attacks on the Twin Towers, then the Pentagon and then the news came that one of the hijacked planes had gone down in a field near Shanksville? I believe every American who was old enough to remember does remember their exact location they were when that news was broadcast. As we remained glued to the TV screen or radio that day, the words terrorist attacks quickly became part of the conversation. We were under attack by Islamic terrorists.
